Although the chance that you can achieve a high level sufficient to participate in professional productions is small (although history knows such examples), ballet as a hobby can be a great activity for a person of any age.

Remember that adult dance classes are usually held in the evenings or during the day so that you can catch them after work.

Buy the right clothes. In the first lesson, you don’t need a tutu, but a good sports leotard, tight tights for sports and a wrap cardigan will come in handy immediately. If you will buy all this in a specialized dance store, then get ready to pay a tidy sum for your dance outfit! Such things are usually pretty well done, so they will last a long time. Although you can always start practicing in a simple sports uniform or even just in a T-shirt and sweatpants, you don’t need to spend money on special clothes for ballet until you are absolutely sure that these classes are suitable for you.

Pick the right shoes. Ballet would not be ballet without pointe shoes, so the right shoes here are not worth saving. Buy quality leather or fabric pointe shoes. It is important to first ask your ballet school which pointe shoes you prefer or advise you there. And do not buy pointe shoes with a pointed nose - they are suitable only for professional dancers, and the chance that you will become just that is really small. Be prepared to also buy ballet tapes that tie pointe shoes to the foot. They are usually sold separately and sewn to pointe shoes manually. This is not difficult to do - you just need to choose the correct length of ribbons and, using simple stitches, sew them to the pointe lining. If you are not sure how to do this, then ask for advice in the store where you purchased them, or at your dance school.

Where to begin

Start by adopting your own body. Girls who have been practicing ballet for at least six months confidently say that shyness can be rejected already in the first lesson, because nobody needs it in the ballet class - neither you, nor your neighbors on the machine. During the lessons, no one will have time to look at your imperfect forms.

Body ballet or classic

Decide what is more important for you: to improve your figure or to find something for the soul. If all your life you have been a fan of active training, and then decided to try yourself in ballet, then choose a body ballet. It includes elements of classical choreography, but is complemented by exercises from Pilates and some yoga. Such exercises strengthen joints, make the hips and waist thinner and improve metabolism. It happens that classes in body ballet are conducted by a fitness trainer who has not practiced ballet before. But it’s better to find a teacher with a choreographic education.

In classical ballet classes, you will learn the basics of a ballet school, focusing on the technique, and not on the development of muscles. Although, of course, you will get a toned body and famous posture. And, as a bonus, you will learn to dance, getting to the beat of the music, you will understand the ballet and, perhaps, you will learn a couple of backstage stories from an experienced teacher.

What muscles work

During the lesson, you improve coordination and work out all the muscles. The main load goes to the back and abs, they should always be in good shape. Indeed, it is worth a lot of effort to leave the body motionless, giving it out with your hands and feet. Over time, plasticity will also come to you, and the ability to “turn” parts of the body at a seemingly incredible angle.

What to wear

That’s what really pleases the girl’s soul is the choice of clothes for training. First, of course, you will come to class in regular leggings and a top. But, when you begin to enjoy the process and the look of yourself in the mirror, you will stare at the body, tutu and skirts, shoppers. And over time, all this will migrate to your wardrobe. If it’s more convenient for you to practice in traditional sportswear, try going to a workout in overalls: it completely fits the body, and you can put on a skirt over it. In addition, it is now wildly fashionable: in tight-fitting overalls of the Territory of yoga brand, Lena Perminova and Oksana Lavrentieva are engaged in Pilates. How much do you need to do

Communicate as much as possible with the teacher: ask if you do not understand something, and communicate if you feel unpleasant sensations in the body. It’s good if you can do it in the morning. At this time, more energy and control the body will be easier.

Do you need pointe shoes

You should definitely not bring them to the first lesson. Soft ballet flats will be more than enough. You will stand on pointe shoes carefully and for a long time. When you feel confident in your legs and can stand on the toes, and the trainer says that the ankle is ready to withstand the foot, you can try to work out in pointe shoes. Everything is very individual here: someone gets on pointe shoes after four months of classes, and someone - after a year and a half. And here it is also important to consult with a trainer, he will tell you when your legs will be ready for such a heavy load. Only after that you can safely go choose pointe shoes.

Do not rush to order them on the Internet, pointe shoes must be measured. It all depends on the shape and completeness (indicated by the letter “X”) of the legs. Most likely, before buying, you will need to re-measure at least 15 pairs to find perfectly sitting on your leg. We recommend that beginners feel free to go to the stores of the Russian Grishko brand: pointe shoes of this brand are considered the softest, it is easier to wear them in comparison with R-class pointe shoes, for example. Although the latter are also not inferior in quality. Do not forget about special inserts in pointe shoes: they soften the surface and the fingers will be much more comfortable. Better immediately take silicone liners - they are more durable. In any case, be prepared for the fact that with frequent training, pointe shoes will need to be changed. For comparison: a prima ballerina per month can change 30 pairs. In your case, the volumes, of course, are not the same, but here the fabric will quickly wear out. Although there are exceptions. American company Gaynor minden produces pointe shoes from special durable plastic. So durable that you will be able to wash pointe shoes in a washing machine without fear. But you need to choose your model very carefully: due to their high strength, they will not change shape over time, adapting to your foot. Gaynor Minden pointe shoes should already be cast in the store. Otherwise, in the future you will not be able to carry them. In professional ballet, this brand is valued precisely for durability.

How to eat

Ballet classes require stamina, but at the same time you should feel easy. Divide your daily diet into five meals. Servings should be small. Never deny yourself breakfast: it will give strength for the whole day. If you exercise in the morning, then eat two hours before class. Have a small fruit snack at noon. Eat low-fat fish with vegetables, seasonal salad or low-fat soup. Before the evening class, you can eat a piece of dark chocolate - it will give energy. But try to have the last meal two hours before class. But after that, do not deny yourself a dinner. Carpaccio, stewed vegetables, baked fish - all this contains a sufficient amount you need to restore vegetable and animal fats and proteins. Professional ballerinas are advised to drink at least 2.5 liters of water. And during training it is better to drink warm water - it warms up the muscles well.

Your school is where you find a teacher comfortable for yourself. Perhaps for this you will need to go for a couple of classes to different schools. Unlike other types of dance, ballet is a rather traumatic event. If, say, there are no special contraindications for bachata, salsa or modern dances, then one must be very careful with ballet. The most important and basic thing that you must do before giving the child away or enrolling in the class of classical choreography itself is to check the contraindications.
