Yemeni Chameleons in nature they are most often found in the north of Madagascar, in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

The head of the Yemeni chameleons is crowned with a powerful upwardly pointed crest, and on the back there is a dense row of spiky scales, gradually decreasing in size as they approach the tail. Similar spikes pass along the chin, passing to the abdomen. As a rule, the strongest representatives of the sex of this kind can boast of the most striking fancy dress. Females have a more modest color and rounded body shapes.

Young chameleons do not immediately acquire a characteristic color. At an early age they are all. regardless of gender, light green. This, however, does not interfere with determining the sex of animals immediately after birth: males are distinguished by a clearly visible calcaneal spur - a small outgrowth that is located on the fold of the "two-fingered" hind paw. Chameleons begin to stain by 6-7 months. Around this time, animals become sexually mature.

The Yemeni chameleon has established itself as a very energetic animal, capable of manifesting character if necessary. For this reason, adults are kept separately. The female is planted in the male for mating.

The male reacts to the approach of the partner by a color change: the yellow stripes along the body become brighter. At this moment, the animal shows its robe in all its glory. The female is ready to mate by rocking the body from side to side. This behavior can be observed for 3-4 days. The fact that the courtship was a success is judged by the changed color of the female. In addition, she becomes more voracious and aggressive. At this point, it is better not to leave the terrarium for the chameleon unattended, since the chameleons can cause very serious injuries to each other. A pregnant female must be kept separately, creating the most comfortable conditions for her.

In my practice, there was a case when a female did not allow a single male to come in, demonstrating a “pregnant” color when approaching the next applicant. She openly showed aggression until we accidentally planted a male for her, who, from our point of view, was not particularly attractive and had a fairly advanced age.

When it appeared, our "little bug" began to show complete humility and provide the male with various signs of attention. I can only say that from this unusual pair we received 30 young strong animals, some of which even replenished our collection.

Pregnancy lasts about two months. A week before giving birth, the female becomes very restless, refuses food. The Yemeni chameleon belongs to the oviparous, so in advance it is necessary to prepare a nesting chamber with high sides. The size of the nesting chamber should be such that the female fits entirely in this bowl. A filler can be a mixture of land with peat, perfect. vermiculite. The main thing is that the substrate is sufficiently moist and loose. Place the nesting chamber in the far corner of the terrarium, masking it with pieces of bark, plant leaves, etc.

A female Yemeni chameleon lays from 15 to 30 eggs, which are then placed in an incubator, where they are kept at a temperature of 26-27 ° C. During the incubation process, the masonry needs to spend the winter, lowering the temperature in the incubator to 18-19 ° C.

Since chameleons of this species are energetic and active, I advise you to use a spacious terrarium for their maintenance, equipped with ventilation holes in the lid and on the front wall. Daytime temperature should be at 28 ° C. A night-time temperature difference of up to 20-22 ° C is also required. Humidity should be maintained at 70-80%. To quench your thirst, the chameleon will be licking drops of water, which must be sprayed on the terrarium twice a day.

The diet of the Yemeni chameleon is made up of various insects and their larvae - for example, banana crickets, zoophobus larvae. butterflies and larvae of wax moths, locusts, medium-sized cockroaches, etc. Once or twice a month, you can offer a newborn mouse.

These animals are not averse to diversifying their “meat” diet with various herbal supplements, such as tradescantia, which are planted right in the terrarium, replenishing its supplies from time to time. You can also experiment with soft fruits, such as bananas, apples, sweet citrus fruits. Your pet will definitely try and love any of this.

Panther Chameleon

Similar conditions are inherent in the panther chameleon Furcifer pardalis. This is a large, reaching a length of 50-55 cm, fantastically colored reptile. On her head is a "helmet", consisting of two lying petals. By the degree of their bulge, one can judge the fatness of the animal.

The "helmet" goes into a series of pointed spikes, which stretches along the entire spine, ending at the base of the tail. The lower jaw is noticeably enlarged due to the large scales located on it. Along the lower jaw, like a Yemeni chameleon, a number of small pointed scales are noticeable. The color options for the leopard chameleon are quite diverse - from pale blue to blood red. The predominant color morph depends, as a rule, on the habitat.

Panther Chameleon most often found in the north and east of Madagascar, as well as on nearby islands. Animals prefer to settle on palm trees and other trees and shrubs. They are not afraid to approach human settlements. At the same time, experts note that other species of chameleons are not found in the area of pardalis.

A newborn chameleon is painted rather poorly, with a predominance of, as a rule, brownish-beige tones. Only by the age of 7-9 months does the chameleon acquire adult coloring. Around the same time, you can determine the sex of the animal.

At birth, it is almost impossible to determine sex. Like most reptiles, females are much poorer in color. They. like newborn animals, they prefer the same beige-brown gamut, “dressing up” only to demonstrate pregnancy or their readiness for mating. In this case, various shades of orange, pink, red, terracotta, etc. will be noticeable.

For mating, the female is planted in the terrarium to the male. When a male notices the presence of a female, he slightly brightens and, nodding his head intensely, tries to approach her. In case the female is ready for mating, she does not show aggression, but rather, tries to run away or hide. The female is ready for mating for 3 days, then she becomes very aggressive, and her appetite is noticeably enhanced.

Pregnancy in panther chameleons lasts 30-45 dienes, after which she lays 15-45 eggs, instilling them in a moist, loose litter of a terrarium or in a pre-prepared nesting chamber, like a Yemeni chameleon. The masonry plate is transferred to an incubator, where the eggs will be stored at a temperature of 27-28.

Terrarium for keeping a panther chameleon should be quite spacious, equipped with ventilation holes, as well as the necessary electrical equipment that simulates the natural temperature regime and the change of day and night. The optimum daily temperature for this species can be considered 28 ° C. At night, this figure can be reduced by b-7. The daylight hours are 10-12 hours.

The diet of panther chameleons consists of feed insects and newborn mice. It is worth noting the fact that females of the leopard chameleon eat small lizards. Particular attention should be paid to methods of moisture consumption. Forced drinking is usually used twice a week. You can teach your pet to drink from a bowl or he will independently lick drops of sprayed water. The main thing is that the chameleon receives enough water. Life expectancy in captivity is 4-5 years. Females live a little.

Thanks to its excellent health, it is precisely the panther chameleons that can be recommended for beginner terrarium workers.

Jackson's Chameleon

Jackson's chameleon is also quite simple in content. The main distinguishing feature of the males of these chameleons are the three horns on the face. The middle one is located on the tip of the nose and is curiously bent up. The other two are mounted directly above the eyes. It is this frightening decoration that makes the chameleon related to the real dragon. Additional similarities are given to these characters by small spikes located along the back of the reptile. In female Jackson chameleons, horns are only indicated by small conical scales.

In the color of Jackson's chameleon reaching a length of 30-32 cm, various shades of green with the addition of brownish-yellow tones predominate. Young individuals are almost black in color with characteristic white spots in the form of a triangle.

In nature, Jackson's chameleon is found in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, including at altitudes of about 2000 meters above sea level. Reptiles prefer areas whose climate is characterized by plenty of rain and high humidity. This fact must be taken into account when equipping a terrarium.

Jackson's chameleons characterized by a calm disposition, so you can keep them in pairs. However, it is necessary to exclude the accidental occurrence of two males in the same terrarium. This will lead to serious civil strife, which can end very badly. The possibility of paired content must be considered when designing a terrarium. It should be spacious enough and abound with dense vegetation, preferably with large leaves. However, if you do not have enough experience of a terrarmist. it’s better to temporarily limit yourself to cherishing one individual. I dare to assure you, it is no less interesting.

These chameleons become sexually mature by about K months. The female, ready for pairing, having seen the male, begins to show slight aggression. Typically, a threatening posture may be accompanied by lateral swaying of the torso.

For the male Jackson chameleon, this behavior is a signal for further action. Encouragement of courtship can be called a change in the color of the female, which begins to lighten literally when her partner approaches. The female is ready for mating for 10 days. But if necessary, this period can be increased up to 30 days.

Jackson's Chameleon refers to live-bearing species. Pregnancy lasts from 3 to 6 months. 2 weeks before the upcoming birth, the female stops eating, becoming very restless. In this case, a nest camera is not needed. The female lays sticky eggs (they usually happen from 7 to 35) on branches and leaves. Under the shell you can see young animals. They break through the egg shell and go outside.

The Jackson Chameleon Terrarium has some design features. For example, in order to ensure effective ventilation, it is desirable to make the side walls completely replace the glass with a strong mesh. It is necessary to think over that. how to maintain humidity at a level of 50-70% during the day and about 100% at night.

This can be achieved by installing a primitive small fountain in the terrarium, using a low-power aquarium pump as a pump. In addition, twice a day, the animal room is necessarily sprayed with water from a spray bottle. As for the temperature, during the day it is maintained within 24-26 ° C. and at night 13-15 ° C.

Jackson's chameleon feeds on crickets, cockroaches and other insects. Very fond of slugs, small snails. With appetite gobbles up newborn mice. Some individuals were "caught" in eating vegetation.

Jackson's chameleon is a recognized long-liver. Life expectancy in animals of this species in captivity is 5-7 years. The literature describes the case when the female lived to be 9 years old.

If you already have sufficient experience in keeping chameleons, you can try your hand with Chamaeleo (Trioceros) quadricomis. The main external difference of these animals are four small horns located on the tip of the nose, as well as fancy dorsal and caudal ridges that resemble fringe on a rigid frame. An adult chameleon is painted in various shades of green. Closer to the back you can distinguish glare of pale blue, and on the sides orange spots are clearly visible. Females of this species, as befits, are painted a little poorer.

The length of Chamaeleo (Trioceros) quadricomis reaches 40 cm, the females are noticeably smaller (about 30 cm). Under natural conditions, these chameleons are found in the mountainous regions of Cameroon and Nigeria at an altitude of 1600-2200 meters. According to the conditions of detention, this species is most similar to Chamaeleo jecksonii. It belongs to oviparous species.

Unfortunately, I do not have detailed information on breeding of this species in captivity, since my practice in this case was limited only to raising young animals and keeping adult animals. We observed the mating process and childbirth, but during the incubation period, the embryos died. According to data taken in German publications, the incubation temperature is 18-23 ° C, and its period is approximately 164-168 days.
