Click icon Settings to specify the necessary parameters in the Text recognition - Settings dialog box. See Text recognition of scanned documents.
If this option is selected, after scanning, the Document Properties dialog box appears. In the Document Properties dialog box, you can add metadata or information about the scanned document to the PDF file. When creating multiple files, you can enter common metadata for all files.
PDF / A compliant
Select this option to ensure that the generated PDF complies with the ISO standards for PDF / A-1b.
Optimize Scanned PDF Dialog Box
The Enhance PDF Scanned Document dialog box provides controls for compressing and filtering the scanned image for a PDF document. The default settings are suitable for a wide range of document pages, but you can change them if necessary to improve image quality, reduce file size, or to configure scanning.
Click to display all image enhancement options.
Apply adaptive compression
Divides each page into black-and-white, color and grayscale areas and selects a mode in which the appearance is preserved with a high degree of compression of each type of content. The recommended scan resolution is 300 dots per inch (dpi) for RGB images and grayscale images, 600 dpi for black and white.
Color / Grayscale Scanning
When scanning color pages or grayscale pages, select one of the following options:
Applies JPEG2000 compression to the color content of the image (using this setting is not recommended when creating PDF / A files, use the JPEG format instead).
Applies ZIP compression to the color content of an image.
Applies JPEG compression to the color content of an image.
The scanner uses the selected Color / Grayscale option or the Monochrome option. The choice depends on the options specified in the Acrobat Scan dialog box or in the TWAIN scanner interface, which opens when you click the Scan button in the Acrobat Scan dialog box. (by default, the scanner application dialog box does not open).
When scanning black-and-white or plain pages, select one of the following options.
JBIG2 (without loss of quality) and JBIG2 (with loss of quality)
Applies the JBIG2 compression method for input black and white pages. At high quality settings, lossless compression is used, at low values the text is compressed more strongly. Text pages are typically 60% smaller than CCITT Group 4 compressed pages, but the compression process takes longer. Compatible with Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4) and later.
For compatibility with Acrobat version 4.0, use a compression method other than JBIG2.
Applies CCITT Group 4 compression to black and white page input images. This fast lossless compression method is compatible with Acrobat 3.0 (PDF 1.2) and later.
Small Volume / High Quality
Adjust the balance between file size and quality.
Rotates any page whose sides are not perpendicular to the sides of the scan area to vertically align the PDF page. Select On or Off.
Stains white areas close to white with a color input image or image in grayscale (but not for black and white images).
For best results, adjust the contrast and brightness settings of the scanner so that the text on the scanned plain black and white page is dark gray or black and the background is white. Then with the selected options Off or Low, the results will be better. If you are scanning a white document with a yellow tint or newsprint, select Medium or High to clear the page.
Removes a halftone dot structure that can reduce JPEG compression, cause moire, and make text difficult to recognize. Suitable for scanning at a resolution of 200-400 dpi of RGB images and images in grayscale, for the Adaptive compression setting and for scanning at a resolution of 400 to 600 dpi in black and white. If you select On (recommended), a filter is applied for scanning with a resolution of 300 dpi (or higher) of RGB images and images in grayscale. Select Off when scanning a page without illustrations or filled areas, or when scanning at a resolution higher than the working range.
Makes the text of the scanned PDF file clearer. The default setting (low quality) is suitable for most documents. Increase it if the quality of the printed document is poor and the text is unclear.
Scanning from Acrobat accepts images with a resolution in the range of 10–3000 dpi. When you select Image as searchable or ClearScan in the PDF Output Style section, a resolution of the output image of at least 72 dpi is required. In addition, the resolution of the output image in excess of 600 dpi will be reduced to 600 dpi or less.
Image compression without loss of quality can only be performed with monochrome images. To compress the scanned image without losing quality, select one of the following options in the Optimization Settings section of the Optimized Scanned PDF dialog box: CCITT Group 4 or JBIG2 (no loss of quality) for monochrome images. If this image is added to the PDF document, you can save the file using the Save option; the scanned image remains without compression. When you save a PDF using the Save As function, the scanned image may be compressed.
For most pages, scanning in black and white at 300 dpi gives the best results for conversion. At a resolution of 150 dpi, the accuracy of optical character recognition is slightly reduced and the number of font recognition errors increases, at a resolution of 400 dpi and higher, processing slows down and the size of files with compressed pages increases. If the page contains many unrecognized words or small text (9 points or less), try scanning at a higher resolution. When possible, scan in black and white.
If the Optical Character Recognition function is disabled, you can use a resolution in the range of 10–3000 dpi, the recommended resolution is 72 dpi and higher. For the adaptive compression setting, the recommended scanning resolutions are 300 dpi for grayscale and RGB images and 600 dpi for black and white images.
Pages scanned in 24-bit color mode, 300 dpi, 8.5 x 11 inches (21.59 x 27.94 cm) in size are large images (25 MB) before compression. A system may require 50 MB or more of virtual memory to scan an image. At a resolution of 600 dpi, the scanning and processing process usually occurs four times slower than at 300 dpi.
Avoid adjusting the midtones and diffusion blending settings of your scanner. This can improve the appearance, but it will become difficult to recognize the text.
For texts printed on colored paper, it is recommended to increase the brightness and contrast by about 10%. If the scanner provides light filtering, suppress the background color using a special filter or lamp. Or, if the text is not suppressed, try adjusting the contrast and brightness of the scanner to clear the scanned document.
If the scanner has a manual brightness control, adjust it so that the characters are clear and have the correct shape. If the characters are interconnected, use higher settings (brighter color). If the characters are separated, use lower options (darker color).

CamScanner is one of the most popular mobile applications for scanning documents, notes, business cards. The application can automatically correct the perspective, crop, improve the quality of the resulting image, in order to get a more presentable and easy to read file. Scans can be saved in JPEG or PDF, depending on your desire. Registered users can use the cloud service to store and share their documents. In addition, there is a premium subscription ($ 4.99 per month or $ 40 per year), which provides additional features, including text recognition.
Google Drive is typically used to access Google’s cloud service and office suite, but the app can also serve as a quick and easy-to-use document scanner. In the main program window, next to the buttons for downloading and creating files, you will see a button Scan. Like the previous application, Google Drive can significantly improve your picture, correct the wrong proportions and crop white margins. The resulting PDF file is saved directly to the cloud and is accessible from any of your devices. But the most important thing is that there is the possibility of recognizing text, which means you can additionally edit it, save it in other formats, use search, and so on.
If for some reason you did not use the previous two applications, then give Genius Scan a chance. It is quite simple, but effectively copes with the assigned task. A gentleman's set, in the form of auto-correction of perspective, recognition and cropping of fields, correction of photo quality, is present here. But besides this, there is a paid version of the program with advanced integration with Box, Dropbox, Evernote and other cloud services.
And in conclusion, we can only share a few general tips for filming documents.
- Do not photograph documents at an angle, as this may leave parts of the image out of focus.
- Try to ensure the best filling of the space in the frame.
- Place the document on a well-lit surface. Use the phone flash if required.
- If the document is inside a plastic file, then remove it. This will eliminate reflections, and the picture will turn out better.
