Oily skin: what to do and how to treat at home

Oily skin is one of the common skin types, which is characterized by excessive activity of the sebaceous glands, a rough, loose texture with expanded pores, an unhealthy color and a greasy sheen. It should be noted that this is one of the four existing types of dermis, i.e. a variant of the norm, and not as a separate disease.

Very often comedones (black dots), blackheads, cysts of the sebaceous glands, seborrhea, i.e. there is a tendency to these negative phenomena, but oily - does not mean problem skin, with proper care all these troubles can be avoided.

Oily skin - causes

  • Genetic predisposition. In this case, the dermis does not change throughout life and remains oily, however, there are few such cases, only 5-8% of all cases.
  • Adolescence . Most often, adolescents are the owners of this feature, but by the age of 25-30, oily skin goes into combination skin.
  • The strengthened work of sebaceous glands. This may be due to a hereditary predisposition, disruption of the digestive tract (cholecystitis, colitis, constipation), hormonal changes, nutrition (addiction to spicy, fatty, floury foods, alcohol, soda), work in conditions of elevated temperatures and dust, exposure to cigarette smoke, sun radiation.
  • Hormonal causes. Oily skin is characteristic for puberty, the second phase of the menstrual cycle, menopause, pregnancy, prolonged stressful situations. It happens against the background of hormonal treatment or prolonged use of oral contraceptives, as well as a sharp cessation of hormones.
  • Disorders of the endocrine system. With hypothyroidism, there is a general dryness of the skin and oily dermis on the face.
  • Immunity violation. A decrease in the body's immune defense can also be manifested by this symptom.
  • Improper hygiene: aggressive cleansing of the skin with alcohol-containing cosmetics and scrubs, constant degreasing of problem areas, the use of oily creams, etc. Removal of the surface lipid layer leads to even greater compensatory work of the sebaceous glands. Frequent peeling injures the epidermis and activates the production of sebum, which is produced to protect the damaged surface. Greasy creams clog pores and mix with sebum. Therefore, the answer to the question why facial skin is oily, you should start looking for yourself.

Diseases in which one of the symptoms is oily skin:

  • diabetes mellitus - a polysystemic pathology that affects all organs and systems,
  • cachexia, exhaustion in women - a lack of building material for the synthesis of female hormones, against which the level of male hormones rises,
  • obesity - oily skin as a result of malnutrition and excessive sweating,
  • ovarian tumors, polycystic ovary disease - a phenomenon, again, is a consequence of elevated levels of male hormones,
  • hyperandrogenism in men - an increased level of male hormones in representatives of the strong sex amid enthusiasm for bodybuilding, sports and the use of synthetic testosterone for muscle growth,
  • hypertrichosis is a disease characterized by excessive hairiness and a change in the level of hormones, which, again, causes oily skin,
  • liver diseases such as fatty degeneration, hepatitis, because the liver performs an intoxication function, including, removes excess hormones. A characteristic feature is oily skin of the nasolabial folds and forehead.

When to see a doctor

Actually, a doctor should be consulted in all cases when such a symptom arose for no apparent reason, especially in adulthood. Treatment requires all the complications - boils, carbuncles, phlegmon.

The fact is that skin fat is an excellent breeding ground for the development of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus, propionobacteria and streptococcus. Causing local inflammatory processes, actively multiplying, bacteria can infect healthy tissues and spread throughout the body, causing an extensive infectious process that can end fatally.

Oily, thickened, coarse, untidy and glossy and uneven surface of the skin, with a grayish, dull color. Often the appearance resembles an orange peel - the pores are clearly visible and, with proper care, practically gap or are filled with liquid fat. With insufficient or improper care, clogging of the pores occurs - comedones are formed, as well as acne and milia. The phenomena of seborrhea and thalangiectasia are possible.

Oily skin has its advantages: the constantly present natural oily mantle protects the skin from adverse external influences, prevents photoaging and loss of elasticity. It is proved that people with this type of dermis age more slowly - wrinkles appear later and are less noticeable.

What to do to its owners of oily skin

  • First of all, the negative impact of aggressive and inappropriate cosmetics, and the cleaning methods that we talked about above, in the causes of the problem (alcohol-containing products, frequent peeling, etc.) are eliminated to the maximum.
  • It is excluded from, or at least limited to, fatty, fried, salty, smoked, pickled and sweet.
  • The basis of the diet should be low-fat fish, white meat, veal, vegetables, fruits, bran.
  • In no case should you go to bed with makeup on your face. Ideally, you should cleanse your face immediately after returning home.

  • removal of excess sebum (but not overdrying)
  • opening and cleansing pores,
  • decreased activity of the sebaceous glands.

Oily skin care can be divided into professional, which is carried out in beauty salons and beauty parlors, and home, accessible to everyone.

  • When cleaning, do not use different washcloths, sponges, as well as alkaline soap and too hot water. Initially, the effect will be very good, and a cleaned dermis will delight dullness. But after 10-15 minutes, a greasy shine will appear again, because both hot water and mechanical stress further stimulate the activity of the sebaceous glands. It is ideal to do everything with your fingertips or a cotton pad, without fanaticism, using warm or cool water.

  • application of ampoules, various serums,
  • gentle facial massage (Jacques, lymphatic drainage),

Possible causes of excessive sebum production

Oily skin dermatologists call problematic

Skin is an organ that instantly reacts to any changes in the work of internal organs, hormonal sphere, diet, lifestyle. In order to find out the reason for the increased production of sebum, you must first undergo a medical examination of the whole body. If its results did not reveal serious health problems, you can begin to independently solve this problem.

The main reasons for the appearance of oily sheen on the face are:

  • puberty
  • menopause
  • pregnancy and lactation,
  • abuse of cosmetics containing alcohol solutions,
  • birth control pills
  • disorders of the thyroid gland,
  • the choice of poor-quality or inappropriate cosmetics specifically for your skin type,
  • insufficient cleansing of the skin of the face,
  • abuse of sugary, fatty, spicy foods, sodas
  • washing with too hot running water, which helps to activate the sebaceous glands,
  • vitamin deficiency and nutritional deficiency of B vitamins,
  • constant use of decorative cosmetics, in particular foundation and powder.

Major Care Mistakes

Masks based on white or blue cosmetic clay perfectly eliminate oily sheen

Dermatologists call oily skin problematic, because due to the increased production of sebum, it is often covered with acne, comedones (black dots), ulcers due to infection or ingestion of pores of dust and pathogenic bacteria.

Owners of oily skin on the face make the following mistakes that can exacerbate the existing problem:

  1. Regularly use alcohol-containing lotions or solutions. Everyone thinks that alcohols can dry oily skin and regulate the sebaceous glands, but this is not so. Everything happens exactly the opposite, that is, the more you wipe your face with alcohol lotions, the stronger your skin will release its own fat. Since alcohols excessively dry the epidermis, a signal is sent to the receptors, and they instantly respond to this by activating the work of the glands to produce sebum.
  2. Washing with hot and hard tap water and soap also provokes increased secretion of sebum, so its temperature should be room or cool. It helps with oily seborrhea rubbing the skin of the face after each washing with ice cubes based on herbal infusions of chamomile, nettle, St. John's wort, celandine, calendula, and succession.
  3. Oily skin needs frequent use of all kinds of scrubs and peels that deeply cleanse the pores of dead skin cells, impurities and accumulated fat in their ducts, which causes blockage and subsequent formation of blackheads.
  4. The use of nourishing creams and masks with a high lipid content with such skin is strictly contraindicated. Light consistency in the form of mousses and gels, deeply moisturizing and allowing the skin to breathe normally, will suit you.
  5. When applying tonal bases with a high content of fats and oils, the pores are instantly closed, and excessive sebum is provoked. The skin does not breathe at all, it constantly shines and is covered with acne.

Good results for regulating the production of sebum have been shown by homemade cosmetic masks, which need to be done 2-3 times a week for a month to get the desired result.

Do not forget that masks are applied exclusively to clean skin, free from daytime impurities and makeup, otherwise they will not bring any effect! They keep such formulations on their faces for 20 to 30 minutes, after which they are washed off with cool water and gently soaked in a disposable paper towel. After the use of masks for oily skin in the warm season, applying care cream is not recommended!

Seborrhea of the scalp

Seborrhea loves those places on the body where the largest accumulation of sebaceous glands. And this is the skin of the face, the scalp, chest and back.

What causes dysfunction of the sebaceous glands?

If you dig "deeper", then the reason is in violation of fat metabolism in the body. Both men and women have hormonal changes, in particular, the content of male sex hormones in the blood rises. This causes increased release of sebum.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a disease!

The word seborrheic - specifically indicates the place of development of this dermatitis, and, more precisely, the "seborrheic" zones of accumulation of the sebaceous glands - the skin of the scalp, face (nose, forehead, chin, nasolabial triangle), the interscapular region of the back, and the midline of the chest.

Inflammatory skin disease can be triggered by hormonal, neurogenic and immune malfunctions in the body, as well as all those reasons that cause seborrhea.

There are three forms of seborrheic dermatitis in the scalp:

  • fatty type (steatoid dandruff): large, oily, yellow scales form at the base of the hair, which contribute to the bonding of the hair. The hair itself is contaminated extremely quickly.

Against the background of provoking factors, an excessive appearance of a yeast fungus can occur in the body, which during normal functioning of the body is harmless, and in excess - accelerates the formation of skin cells and their "exfoliation".

To combat this scourge, we can recommend the new generation shampoo "SEBIPROX" containing cyclopiroxolamine, which in combination with other components has:
